擁有逾 60 年歷史的大坑西新邨，在香港的公共房屋發展史上，有著獨一無二的地位。由私人公司建造及管理，但提供予低收入階層居住，在媒體的形容中，它是「私人屋邨」、「私人廉租屋」、「私人公屋」，而各個字詞，其實都未能完全準確地，形容大坑西新邨的定位。但昔年的惠民政策，經過這麼多年後，其一直沒有辨清的部分，便成為這十多年來重建安置爭議的核心。

本書兩位作者訪問多名邨民，以及與大坑西邨有深厚淵源人士，並整理各項史料，重整出大坑西邨當年的風貌，時代變遷下的改變，以及近年的重建爭議。以訪談形式，記錄香港最後「私營廉租屋」的故事，同時為香港公共房屋政策，留下一個註腳。
